LSX Miata

Welcome to the world of LSX Miatas! This page is designed to inform you of the reasonings and processes involved in converting a 1990-2005 Mazda Miata into a LSX-powered super car.

First, the three questions asked when people hear about the LSX Miata are:

Why the Miata?

The Mazda Miata is the perfect platform for engine conversions. It is a rear-wheel drive, lightweight roadster, under-powered from the factory, stylish chassis, and now available for very affordable rates. If you have never driven a Miata, go out and drive one; you will be hooked!

Why the LSX drivetrain?

The GM LS-engine is extremely efficient in design. The drivetrain is lightweight, fuel efficient, powerful in stock form, easy & inexpensive to modify, and emission friendly. It is the best bang for the buck!

Why the LSX in the Miata?

The chassis and drivetrain pair together as if it were meant to be from the factory. The Miata throttle cable falls into place in the LS1 throttle body and the T56 shifter pops in the center of the factory shifter location. The converted car makes for a balanced (able to obtain 50/50 with suspension tweaking), lightweight (neighborhood of 2400lbs.), and extremely sporty car (300rwhp,300rwtq). Plus, no one expects it!

Requirements:

You will need a Miata chassis. We offer kits to convert any year Miata from 1990-2005. The earlier model Miatas (1990-1997) are known as NA's and the later (1999-2005) are known as NB's (there was no Miata model in 1998). You will need to specify what model you are planning to convert as there are minor differences from one series kit to the other. Often the question of "what year is the best for the conversion?" arises... We recommend you choose the style of car that you prefer as the NA models have the pop-up headlights and are not as curvy as the NB model. The only chassis difference to note is that in 1994, Mazda increased bracing to meet new side impact standards. If you plan on being broad-sided, we recommend 1994 and up models.

A basic set of mechanical tools, snips/sawzall, and wiring accessories are the tools required to perform the conversion. The snips/sawzall is only used to remove a small section of metal from the rear of the engine bay. (We are loaning a sawzall to customers who do not own one).

What can you expect from an LSX-powered Miata?

A 2400-2600 pound roadster that produces 285-300 horsepower/torque and retains the handling and drivability of a factory Miata.

And the result...
